Strategy
Players: 2-8
Requires: Standard 52 card deck + 2 jokers
Introduction
Rummy 500, also known as 500 Rum, is one of the most popular variant of traditional Rummy . The game aims to score points by forming sets or runs of cards.
Objective of the Game
The goal is to be the first player to reach 500 points. Points are scored by creating melds, which are sets or runs of cards that are laid down during a player’s turn.
- Sets: Three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., three 5s).
- Runs: Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., 7, 8, 9 of hearts).
Step by Step Guide
Deal the Cards:
- For 2 players: deal 13 cards each.
- For 3 or 4 players: deal 7 cards each.
- For 5+ players: deal 5 cards each.
Set Up the Draw Pile and Discard Pile:
Place the remaining deck face down as the draw pile. Flip the top card face-up next to it to start the discard pile.
3. Draw a Card
- At the start of their turn, each player must take one card.
- Players can draw from either the top of the draw pile or the discard pile.
4. Form Melds (Optional)
- Players can lay down sets or runs (melds) in front of them.
- Players may also add cards to their own or other players’ existing melds to score additional points.
- Each player must have at least one card in hand to continue playing.
5. Discard a Card
- At the end of each turn, players discard one card onto the discard pile.
- The turn ends after discarding.
Ending the Round
- A round ends when a player gets rid of all their cards by melding or discarding the last card.
- If the draw pile runs out, reshuffle the discard pile to create a new draw pile.
Scoring
At the end of each round, calculate the scores as follows:
- Each player adds up the point value of cards in their melds.
- Subtract the points of any remaining cards left in hand.
Card Point Values:
- Numbered cards (2–10): Face value (e.g., 5 = 5 points).
- Face cards (Jack, Queen, King): 10 points each.
- Aces: 15 points.
The player who ends the round gets a bonus 25 points.
Winning the Game
Play rounds until one player reaches or exceeds 500 points. That player is declared the winner!
Example of a Turn
- Draw a card from either the draw pile or the discard pile.
- Check for melds and lay them down if you have a set or run.
- Add to existing melds if possible.
- Discard a card to end your turn.
Strategy
Start by focusing on creating high-value melds (sets or runs) to maximize points early. Track the discard pile to understand what cards your opponents may need, and avoid discarding those. Use the discard pile strategically, only picking up cards when it helps complete a meld without revealing too much of your strategy. Keep low-value cards longer, as they minimize penalties if left unplayed. Aim to end the round on your terms, going out when you have the highest possible points while limiting cards in hand. Finally, delay laying down melds to keep opponents guessing and maintain flexibility in your strategy.
